Training Class

ORHS will be holding the first hands-on training class covering our operating and safety rules, locomotive operation and maintenance, switching, air brakes and track maintenance.

You must be at least 21 years of age, an ORHS member in good standing, attended safety and operating rules training and be approved by the committee. All current members of the Mechanical Crew are also requested to attend. If you are interested in learning, please contact us at the depot and leave your name and phone number.

Please note that this is not a certification class in any way. This training is meant to familiarize you with safety, maintenance and operation of our equipment.

Class starts at 9:00 AM at the Depot and will run until about 3:00 PM.


Orrville Spring Flyer

Boarding starts approximately 30 minutes prior to departure.
Times are approximate and may be adjusted prior to the trip.

In cooperation with the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway, we are pleased to offer the all day, 120-mile Spring Excursion. This excursion will depart from Orrville in Wayne County and return to Orrville.

The trip will depart from 245 McGill Street, Orrville, Ohio 44667 and then proceed northwest through Smithville, Creston, Lodi and Spencer. At Spencer, we'll reverse our direction of travel and proceed east through Medina and Copley to our afternoon stop at Akron-Northside District for an approximate 3 hour layover for lunch and visiting downtown attractions. Departing Akron, we'll travel through Mogadore, Hartville, Canton, Navarre and Brewster returning to Orrville.

The Spring Flyer will again feature Wayne County's own "Keepsake". They will take passengers back to those memorable days of yesteryear when they stroll through the train harmonizing to songs from yesterday to music from legends. Whether it's gospel, a little bit country, the Fabulous 50's, show tunes, patriotic, or a trip-down-memory-lane songs, our passengers will enjoy this trio made up of Kim Beckler, Shirley Wharton, and LaDeane Knapp.

The Akron Glass Works Hot Glass Studio and Zeber-Martell Gallery & Clay Studio in the Northside District will be open for our passengers.

The Akron Trolley also will be available to take passengers to nearby attractions such as the Akron Art Museum and Cascade Locks Park.

An optional  lunch from Luigi's Italian Restaurant consisting of two slices of pizza, salad and a non-alcoholic beverage will be offered to all Premium Coach and Coach passengers for an additional $10.00 charge. Lunch is included in the First Class fare. Your lunch must be purchased with your ticket order. The deadline for purchasing tickets with lunch is 5 PM, Sunday, April 20, 2014. The deadline for purchasing excursion-only tickets is 12 noon, Friday, April 25, 2014. The ORHS concession car will also offer snack food and beverages.

FIRST CLASS: $209. Limited Availability. Lunch is included. First Class passengers enjoy premium amenities including snacks, soft drinks and attendant service.

PREMIUM COACH: $129. Includes snacks and soft drinks.

National Train Day Celebration

The National Train Day Celebration in Orrville, Ohio. There will be train and track car rides at 245 McGill St. The Depot and Gift Shop will also be open and other historic sites in Orrville may be open for tours.

The Depot and Gift Shop will be open with displays, train layouts, food, and entertainment. Tickets for the Orrville Autumn Express and Riding with Santa will be available at the ticket office.

Train, track car rides and other events are at the siding on McGill Street. Train and track car rides are about 15 minutes long.

In cooperation with the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway, we are pleased to offer our 120 mile, five-county circular “Orrville Autumn Express”.

The trip will depart Orrville and head southeast through Brewster, Navarre, Canton, Hartville, Mogadore, Akron, Copley and prior to our arrival in Medina we will cross the impressive River Styx Trestle. You will disembark for a three-hour stopover at The A.I. Root Candle Co. & West Liberty Commons where many passengers enjoy shopping.

Leaving Medina, we’ll head west to Spencer, turn south and proceed through Lodi, Creston, Smithville and return to Orrville.

An optional buffet style lunch consisting of two pieces of roasted chicken, red skin potatoes, green beans, roll with butter, cake and beverage for an additional $10.00 per person will be offered. Your lunch must be purchased with your ticket order. The deadline for purchasing tickets with lunch is 5 PM, October 4, 2013; 5 PM October 11 for excursion-only tickets.

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY! The ORHS will be hosting our annual “Jumpin’ Pumpkin Jamboree”. Join us for one mile round trip train and track car rides on the ORHS siding to Orrville Junction and back. Train and track car rides will begin at 12:00 noon with the last ride at 4:00 PM. The train and track cars will be leaving from and returning to the McGill Street boarding area. The Depot and Gift Shop will also be open.

Tickets available trackside the day of the event only!

ADULTS: $2.00 per ride.

CHILDREN (12 and Under): $1.00 per ride.

Riding with Santa

Our best Riding with Santa event yet. Stories, songs and Santa. Our 1-1/2 hour “Riding with Santa” round-trips from Orrville are in conjunction with our Annual Holidays at the Depot. The train departs from 245 McGill Street and return there. During this 40 mile round trip Santa will move through the train to visit with each child and collect their Christmas list. Each child also receives a gift bag.

On-board entertainment includes carolers, local singer and guitarist Harry Arble, and Don & Emily Curie.

The train cars will be decorated for the season. The ORHS concession car is available for passengers who wish to purchase snacks, beverages, and souvenirs.

Groups who wish to be seated together must purchase their tickets at the same time with one payment. Contact the Depot for larger group rates. Our coach cars accommodate approximately 50 people.

Departure times are 10 AM, Noon, 2 PM and 4 PM

COACH: Adults: $29 Children (12 and under): $19

FIRST CLASS: $43 Comfortable premium seating. (all ages, seating limited)

All trips leave from the McGill Street boarding area.

Tickets are non-refundable.

Sponsorships are available. If you enjoy our Riding with Santa trains and would like to help fund the event, then a sponsorship may be for you. We have four sponsorship packages starting at $250 or get your name listed in the souvenir activity/song booklet for as little as $5. You can also advertise in the booklet starting at $45.
